The History of China

The Zhou dynasty was divided into three different parts: The western Zhou was the first and strongest period of the Zhou's control because of the strong and powerful hold the Zhou had over China. The eastern Zhou happened after the Mongols killed King Yu of 450 B.C.E. Last was the warring states period where the Zhou's feudal power began to disintegrate.

The Zhou dynasty started as a semi-nomadic tribe to the west of the Shang. They settled in the Wie river valley and gained followers with their nomadic ability to work with all races. Around 1035 B.C.E., the Zhou people started to destroy the Shang's weak hold over western China. At about 1040 B.C.E. the Zhou defeated the Shang in open warfare, moved the capital of China to Xi'an where their rule ran from the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea to the Globi Desert to the north the Chang Jiang Basin to the south and the Turfan Depression to the west. This was the start of the western Zhou period. Then after about 200 years of peace, the Zhou were attacked by Mongols from the north. The king was killed but his son was saved and moved east where the new capital was built in Loyang on the Huang He River. This was the beginning of the eastern Zhou period.

After the overthrow of the Shang dynasty the Zhou moved in and started their rule. The first king, King Wu, announced that his family had been given the mandate of heaven and had the right to rule over China. The Zhou dynasty's government was run under a feudal system like the Shang's was. The land was handed father to son, mother to daughter and so on.

The Zhou dynasty invented several things we use today. They made glass for windows and art, and made the first geological maps. They also perfected some of the things the Shang created: the calendar, bronze casting by creating molds, irrigational systems with stronger supporting waterways, and plowing with stronger iron plows.
